Older People's Day and Silver Sunday 2015 external events

In addition to the events taking place on our estates, there are lots of external public events to get involved in all around the UK in celebration of Older People's Day on 1 October and Silver Sunday on 4 October.

Below are just some of the initiatives taking place, and there's lots more to explore too - simply search online for 'older people's day events'.

Silver Sunday

Silver Sunday takes place each year on the first Sunday of October. The initiative was launched by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation in 2012 to help combat loneliness in older people. Silver Sunday offers people aged over 65 an opportunity to stay active, try out new things and meet their neighbours. The Silver Sunday website has a fantastic calendar of free events - use the handy search tool by selecting ‘Map’ from the drop-down menu under ‘List’ and then zooming into your local area to find out what’s going on.

Independent Age: The Big Tea

This initiative encourages coming together with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to share a cuppa and cake on Older People's Day. Find out more at the Independent Age website and order your Big Tea pack to get started - it contains tips, invititations, games, recipes and things you can do on social media. The Twitter hashtag is #IABigTea

Age Friendly Museums Day

This is a national initiative to promote older audiences in museums and galleries. The British Museum is inviting older people who live in care or sheltered homes to a special event which will include handling objects and visiting our galleries. Download the flyer (PDF format) here.

English National Opera Choir workshop

Learn some music from an opera, plus other fun songs, with English National Opera Community Choir.  Open to all - seasoned singers and whose who just enjoy singing with others. A Silver Sunday initiative. Book your place here.

East Sussex County Council

East Sussex County Council have produced a downloadable PDF format 'Full of Life' brochure featuring a wide variety of fun activities and information throughout September and October. You can also pick up a copy of the brochure from your local library.

South Tyneside Older People's Festival

Age UK has teamed up with a range of agencies, groups and businesses that support the over-fifties in South Tyneside to deliver a week-long celebration of more than 200 activities. Visit Age UK South Tyneside website to find out more and download a festival brochure.

Events in Alderley, Gloucestershire

Health and fitness professionals will attend the Alderley Edge Luncheon Club, which is run by the Royal Voluntary Service, to offer a whole range of useful advice and checks, such as falls prevention activities. There will also be a chair-based fitness class. Other free fitness activities include a Nordic walking taster session in Alderley Edge Park, a Pilates session and bowling at the Alderley Edge Union Club, and some free swimming passes provided by Wilmslow Leisure Centre. Full of Life events in Poole, Dorset

A wide selection of events will commence from 21 September, including meditation, a health and wellbeing fair, coronation tea party, iPad taster session, flower arranging and singing. Visit the Borough of Poole website for the full programme.

BOB JOPE festival in Torbay, Devon

This new festival from 1 to 4 October in Torbay is all about enjoying and celebrating ageing. The exciting programme will include a Big Skills Share day with events such as a wildlife walk and a 'Big Knit and Natter'. and Catch the Wind at the Clipper pub in Torquay. Events in Redbridge, London

This year Redbridge will once again be celebrating Older People's Day with events and activities from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October. Events include socialising, staying healthy and active, learning opportunities and much more. Redbridge is keen to to spread the message that age is no barrier to staying active and being involved in community life. Find out more on the Redbridge i website.

Full of Life Week in Richmond upon Thames, London

Full of Life Week takes place between 4 and 9 October 2015. There are events to choose from every day, with a focus on ICT and everything digital. There's a PDF flyer and full details on the Richmond upon Thames website.
