Lord Mayor of Newcastle opens new lounge at Hanover Close
23 February 2015
A 98-year-old woman is looking forward to her first fish and chips supper after her landlord Hanover Housing Association presented residents of Hanover Close in Newcastle with the keys to their new communal lounge.
The lounge was officially opened by Cllr George Pattison, Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
Around 40 residents joined in the festivities which included a celebratory lunch, a live entertainer and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The new purpose-built lounge provides an environment where residents can meet up with their neighbours and enjoy social activities including coffee mornings, fish and chips suppers, bingo nights and exercise classes.
The creation of the lounge is largely thanks to the efforts of estate manager Sheena Keenleyside who together with housing manager Colin Garbutt worked tirelessly with residents to secure funding and design the new room.
Sheena says: ’It has taken a bit of time but I am delighted with the final result. I am pleased to say that we now have an environment which enables residents to socialise and to stay active within their local community.’
In addition to achieving funding for the lounge, residents have been successful in applying for a grant for a communal computer, printer and broadband connection.
98-year-old Dorrie McCaw says: ’Our new lounge is lovely. I am looking forward to eating my first fish and chips supper whilst catching up with my friends and neighbours.’
