Hanover residents raise nearly £20k for charities
In keeping with our commitment to contributing to the wider community, bumper charity donations totalling nearly £20,000 were raised by residents during September.
Most of the fundraising was in support of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ initiative, which this year was held on 30 September. A variety of events took place, with the largest contribution of £13,255 being raised by 60 Retirement Housing and Extra Care Housing estates across Hanover’s North region.
In keeping with the tradition of the event, many coffee mornings took place to which members of the local community were invited; but there were several other fundraising activities going on too.
For example, Mr Wally Clements raised £358 by swimming a mile, which was the longest distance he has ever undertaken. A resident of our Sunley Orford House Retirement Housing estate in Truro, Wally has arthritis and asthma but was inspired to swim in support of his daughter-in-law who has pancreatic cancer. He will be swimming again in March, raising money for a local children’s hospice.
On 18 September Mrs Angela Wallis of Hanover Gardens, Bicester, completed the four-mile Oxford Memory Walk along with Estate Manager Lisa Varndell. In doing so she raised £260 for The Alzheimer’s Society. Angela said: ‘I found it most enjoyable and rewarding. My husband suffered with dementia and I took part in his memory and for all sufferers. I would definitely do it again.’
