Older residents are bowled over by their new bocce pitch
A bowling court specially designed to help South Gloucestershire’s older people stay fit and active was unveiled during a special inter estate match which was held at Badminton Gardens, Downend, Hanover’s newest Extra Care development in Downend on Thursday 25 August.
Residents of Badminton Gardens challenged fellow residents from Hanover’s Bristol based schemes; Ash Lea Court and Blaise Weston Court to a game of Bocce (or Bowls).
Bocce is a gentle but nonetheless competitive sport and with summer here, residents are already making full use of the pitch by playing with their neighbours, friends and relatives.
Badminton Gardens was developed by Hanover, a leading retirement housing provider, in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council.
The development is designed exclusively for local older people and offers impressive modern properties with state-of-the-art facilities and with care and support on site.
Badminton Gardens residents Roy Peters said: “It was great fun playing against fellow residents from Bristol.
“Although it was a hard fought match I think we really showed them how to play.”
Hanover’s Head of operations West David Hanks: said: “Older people have increasingly high expectations when it comes to housing. Hanover understands this, and offers older people maximum choice, enabling them to live independently.

Badminton Gardens provides housing for independent older people who may need help and support. Each of the 63 properties has high-quality living facilities. One and two-bedroom apartments contain modern fitted kitchens and level-access showers.
Residents have access to the 24/7 ‘Hanover On Call’ service, which provides them with a reassuring emergency response service.
The development also has a shop, hairdressing salon and shared social areas.
