Local facilities

The city of Cambridge is a university town in Cambridgeshire, 50 miles north of London. It is a compact city with a large choice of shops, a daily market and the popular Saturday All Saint’s Garden Art and Craft market. There is also an abundance of boutiques and independent shops as well as high street brands, designer labels and shopping centres.

Mill Road, off Parker’s Piece, is the city’s bohemian area hosting a diverse range of restaurants and shops. The River Cam running through the city centre is used for boating. The University has its own very famous rowing club, and most of the individual colleges have boat houses on the river. Shallower parts of the Cam are used for recreational punting.

Culture and the arts

Cambridge's main traditional theatre is the Arts Theatre, a venue with 666 seats in the town centre. The theatre often has touring shows, as well as those by local companies. The newest theatre venue in Cambridge is the 220-seat J2, also known as The Shed, which hosts live music, comedy and night clubs as well as traditional and contemporary theatre and dance. On the first Saturday in June Midsummer Common is also the site for Strawberry Fair, a free music and children's fair and market.
