Appleby-in-Westmoreland is a small historic town just south of Penrith on the borders of the North Yorkshire National Park. It is perhaps best known as being the location for the annual Appleby Horse Fair. The town has a great choice of small grocers’ shops selling local produce, including an award winning bakery and local delicatessen.

Things to do

Appleby is an excellent centre for exploring the surrounding area and soaking up the scenery. The wide main street of Boroughgate leads to the 12th century castle. The scenic Settle to Carlisle railway runs through the town. The area is ideal for an active person, with the Cumbria Cycle Way, Westmorland Way, Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast Walk nearby.
