The ancient market town of Penzance is the capital of the far west of Cornwall and is set in beautiful Mounts Bay. Its unique location and landscape offer opportunities for outdoor activities including cliff walking and bird watching. Most of the secluded beaches are clean and pollution free.
The town has a range of restaurants, pubs and inns, some with live music and quiz evenings. A number of them provide good value food and are housed in very old and historic buildings, particularly in the Chapel Street area.
The Wharfside Shopping Centre is nearby and offers plenty of chain stores and local specialist shops.
Theatre and Festivals
The Morrab Gardens lie between the town centre and sea front. The mild climate allows the three acres of sub-tropical gardens to thrive. It is home to a surprising variety of plants, shrubs and trees.
The open parkland of Penlee Memorial Park hosts a small open air theatre, tennis courts and a football field. Located within the grounds is the Penlee House Gallery and Museum.
Penzance holds the Montol Festival every December. It is a community arts event reviving many of the Cornish customs of Christmas, such as Guise dancing.
Hanover Court is on Wharf Road overlooking Mounts Bay, not far from the shopping centre. The A30 from London to Land’s End is a trunk road one mile to the east of Penzance. The railway station has local services across the region and further afield to Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Reading and London Paddington.
The bus and coach station is next to the railway station. Local bus services connect Penzance with most major towns in the area, including Truro, St. Ives and Plymouth.
