Hanover Gardens is a small development of 16 one bed apartments, set in a quiet cul de sac. It is situated on the edge of Bishop Auckland near to surrounding countryside. At the back of the properties are allotments which are used by the local community.
There are good bus links to the town centre, as well as a large supermarket and a retail park just half a mile away. The estate also has some private parking bays. A professional estate manager takes care of buildings and grounds maintenance and repairs. Historic Bishop Auckland's main shopping street is Newgate Street, together with Cockton Hill Road and Watling Road. The Fore Bondgate area has boutiques and specialist shops that you won’t find on the High street. The Town Hall is a gothic style Victorian building overlooking the town's market place. It houses the main public library, a theatre, art gallery, tourist information centre and a café-bar.
Woodhouse Close leisure centre has a swimming pool, gym, sauna, steam room and spa pool. Additionally, football pitches, tennis courts and bowling greens are provided at two local recreation grounds.
History and cultural interest
This bustling market town stands high above the River Wear with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The town has a number of listed buildings, including seven in the grounds of the magnificent Auckland Castle. Surrounding the castle are 800 acres of the Bishop's deer park - a great place for a picnic or stroll.
The town also has a Victorian railway viaduct crossing the River Wear. Also of historical interest is the nearby village of Escomb, home to a complete Anglo-Saxon church.
