History, art and culture

Situated in north-west Surrey, 25 miles from London, Woking was originally a village. A large part of the town reflects its Victorian origins. The Lightbox arts and heritage centre contains pieces of conceptual art and exhibitions on local history.

St Peter's Church, Old Woking and the lock at St John’s Lye along the Basingstoke canal are local beauty spots often painted by local artists. The town centre also features a Wellsian Martian Tripod, designed by Michael Condron. The tripod celebrates H.G. Wells’ book, The War of the Worlds, which was written in Woking.
