Pocklington is a small market town approximately 13 miles east of York. The high street contains a mix of public houses, independent shops, banks and restaurants. The town also has the council-run Francis Scaife Sports Centre, which includes a 20 metre swimming pool and gym. There are two golf clubs lying just outside Pocklington - Allerthorpe Park Golf Club with an 18-hole course and Kilnwick Percy Golf Club.

Near the centre of Pocklington is the Burnby Hall Gardens collection of water lilies which has been designated as a "National Collection" by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.

Day trippers also visit Millington Wood and Pocklington Canal Head which has been named one of the top ten places to see water wildlife in Britain. Nearby Allerthorpe Lakeland Park has parkland for walking, a lake with water sports facilities and a separate lake for fly fishing. The Pocklington Arts Centre offers a mixed programme of film, music, drama, dance, lectures, workshops and exhibitions. The annual beer festival is also not to be missed!
