In the local area
Portishead’s traditional Victorian High Street has a good mix of original shops and modern stores to suit all tastes. Sporting facilities are good in the town, including open-air tennis courts, a boating lake, cricket ground, football and hockey pitches plus a leisure complex with a large swimming pool and indoor bowls, as well as many cycle lanes.
The picturesque Lake Grounds offer plenty of space for relaxing, admiring the spectacular views or watching the cricket or bowls. This is a great place to picnic, and refreshments are also available from the café. One of the UK's few surviving outdoor swimming pools is situated on the shore next to the lake grounds and is open during the summer months.
Out and about
There are various groups and societies covering interests such as history, conservation and wildlife issues. There’s also a choral society, an annual carnival plus Portishead Railway Group, who are campaigning for the Portishead to Bristol railway line to be re-opened. Of historical interest is Portishead Point lighthouse and Court House Farmhouse which dates from the medieval period.
There are several nature reserves in the area managed by the Avon Wildlife Trust, which include Weston Big Wood, Clapton Moor, Weston Moor and Walton Common. Nearby attractions include a zoo farm, a fascinating farm and retail museum, and superb National Trust houses and gardens.
Where we are
Portishead in North Somerset has fine views of the Severn Estuary, the Welsh coastline, both Severn bridges to one side and the beautiful and scenic Gordano Valley to the other. Located close to the town’s stylish marina, Waverley Court can be accessed via the A369 from junction 19 of the M5.
The town is served by several bus routes, including those for Bristol, Congresbury and Clevedon. The town does not currently have a railway station, the nearest being at Nailsea or Avonmouth, for services to Bristol Temple Meads.
