Residents celebrate blooming success
Older people from an Extra Care housing estate in Slough were celebrating today when their green fingers earned them a ‘Gold Community Achievement Award’ in the Slough in Bloom regional gardening competition.
Residents from the estate, which is owned by Hanover Housing Association and managed in partnership with Slough Borough Council, celebrated their success with a special afternoon tea where they swapped gardening tips with friends and neighbours.
The prestigious regional award seeks to encourage residents and community groups from Slough to improve the local environment with colourful displays of flowers, trees, shrubs and landscaping projects.
Northampton Place resident and keen gardener Jean Jackson said: “It has been lots of hard work but very enjoyable.
“Just a few months ago there were hardly any plants in the garden.
“We took it in turns to remove all of the dead plants before painting all of the flower beds and planting lots of colourful flowers.
“Although the estate has regular social activities and outings, turning the garden into a wonderland has really brought neighbours together.”
“We’re all looking forward to the next stage – we are hoping to create a water feature which will improve the gardens ambience while we are having afternoon tea.”
Hanover support assistant Monika Rattan said: “Most of the residents are very keen gardeners – they’re thrilled about the award. Working on the garden has brought them closer together and it’s become a place where they can show off to their visitors, family and friends.”
