Our history

We have a track record since 1962 of providing housing and services to over 55s.

Hanover was the first national organisation of its kind to provide housing for older people. In December 1962, we had our first meeting in Regent’s Park at the office of the National Corporation for the Care of Older People. It is from nearby Hanover Gate that we took our name.

At the time, the National Corporation (now the Centre for Policy on Ageing) estimated that 50,000 properties would be needed annually over the next 20 years to meet demand from older people. This was despite some ‘sheltered housing’ built by local authorities and a few housing associations.

The National Corporation decided that this new sheltered housing should:

  • Be for the ‘active elderly’ throughout the country – and  for those in need but not eligible, for various reasons, for other housing.
  • Be used to experiment with designs and layouts and, ideally, with a means of reducing costs without reducing standards
  • Be based on what older people needed and wanted and not what others thought was good for them – a view that was advanced in those days

Over 50 years later, these principles continue to define and differentiate Hanover. We aim to be influential, innovative and to promote positive attitudes towards older people.
