The city is connected by road on an east–west axis from London to West Wales by the M4 motorway, and on a north–southwest axis from Birmingham to Exeter by the M5 motorway. The M32 motorway is a spur from the M4 to the city centre.

Bristol Temple Meads is near the centre, services include regular high speed trains to London Paddington via Bath Spa. Bristol Parkway is located to the north of the city and runs services between Cardiff and London, and services to Birmingham and the North East.
