Following the tragic incident witnessed at Grenfell Tower in London recently, Hanover has undertaken a review of fire safety at all its properties as a matter of urgency.
As part of this process, we have been investigating whether there has been exterior cladding used on any of our buildings which may be similar to that used at Grenfell Tower, what is commonly referred to as aluminium composite materials (ACM). Our initial analysis shows that Hanover has instead used rendered, fire resistant insulation and fire resistant cladding.
Hanover takes fire safety very seriously and has robust fire procedures in place across all of its estates. Regular tests and servicing is conducted for all fire-related equipment by both Hanover staff and qualified contractors. In addition to this, all Hanover staff receive comprehensive training in fire safety awareness and what to do in the event of a fire. This training is refreshed annually.
Fire Risk Assessments
Alongside this, Hanover regularly carries out a stringent Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) of its estates. These FRAs are conducted by fully trained and validated Fire Risk Assessors to ensure that our buildings are safe and that the procedures we have in place will protect residents, staff and visitors.
Fire safety advice for residents
While Hanover fully and regularly assesses all of its estates, and is confident that the correct evacuation and safety strategy is in place at each, we would like to reiterate that if anyone does encounter smoke or a fire in their home the message is quite clearly that they should evacuate to their agreed place of safe refuge. If you become aware of fire or smoke in any part of the building then you should move away towards a safer place, closing doors behind you to help contain the spread of smoke and fire.
Our other advice to residents includes:
- Ensuring you have a working smoke alarm at your property
- Knowing your escape route and plan for the building and what to do in the event of an emergency
- Keeping escape routes clear
- Ensuring that your flat entrance door is closing effectively, and that you report any defects
Grenfell Tower incident findings
Once any findings of the Grenfell Tower incident are published we will carefully review all the recommendations to determine whether they have an impact on Hanover estates and will take relevant action where necessary.
