Forever young at heart as Lillian marks 108 years

13 July 2016

Lillian 108th Birthday 1

A lady from Barking who was born in the same year as 007’s creator Ian Fleming and when London first hosted the Summer Olympic Games has celebrated her 108th birthday.

Born in Poplar, East London in 1908, the former dinner lady and biscuit factory worker has four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Lillian Twinley, who continues to start the day with a bowl of porridge, some grapes and a garlic pill, was joined by friends and neighbours at Harp House as she cut her birthday cake in the Hanover estate’s on-site restaurant.

Amongst her earliest memories, Lillian remembers being bitten by a dog in 1911 and a Zeppelin bursting into flames while flying above the capital during World War I.

Since moving to Harp House in 2005, Lillian hasn’t looked back. She regularly goes dancing and attends quiz nights in the residents' lounge.

Fresh from blowing out her candles, Lillian said: 'I love living here. With a fantastic lounge, restaurant, hair salon and a bowling green, there is nowhere else I would rather be.'

Estate Manager Innocentia Eze said: 'Lillian is a wonderful role model - she is not on any medication, has no mobility issues and has a great memory. She has even tried her hand at Tai Chi!'
