History and attractions
South Shields boasts extensive beaches, sand dunes and coves, plus the dramatic limestone cliffs with The Leas grassy areas above. Marsden Bay has the famous Marsden Rock and a historic pub and restaurant set in the cliffs.
One of the most historic parts of the town is the quaint Westoe village, with its quiet street of Georgian and Victorian houses. With its beautiful setting, parks and trees, this street was often the setting for books by the novelist Catherine Cookson. The town’s museum and art gallery includes a permanent exhibition dedicated to her life. The Customs House theatre and arts venue and the historic Mill Dam riverside are also worth a visit.

Situated close to the Tyne Tunnel at Jarrow, South Shields is bounded by the A19 trunk road. This connects to the A1300 and the A183 Coast Road, allowing easy access to Bramble Court. The town is well connected to other areas of Tyne and Wear and to the A194(M) and the A1/A1(M).
The Tyne and Wear Metro network serves South Tyneside, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Sunderland and Newcastle Airport. A frequent pedestrian ferry service to North Shields also operates. Local bus routes are plentiful, plus there’s also a National Express coach service direct to London.
