In the local area

Jarrow is the second largest town within South Tyneside next to South Shields. The Viking shopping centre has the usual range of high street stores as well as a large Morrisons supermarket and café.

There are also many other smaller outlets including a bakers and a butchers, plus a popular pub that serves food. You’ll find parking is free and plentiful in the town centre. The city of Newcastle is around eight miles away for further shopping facilities.

Points of interest

In 1936 the town was the starting point of the Jarrow March to London, in protest against the level of unemployment in the area.

The twin Anglo-Saxon monastery was home to the Venerable Bede. It is centred around St. Paul’s Church in Jarrow and St. Peter’s Church in Wearmouth, Sunderland. Of interest in St. Paul's is a 7th century chancel from the monastery, some Anglo-Saxon stained glass windows and a display of ancient carved stones.
