Local facilities

Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Greater Manchester at the foot of the beautiful Pennines. It was once a busy coal mining and mill town that supported industry following the industrial revolution.

Nowadays these old cotton mills have been redeveloped into galleries, shopping centres and art complexes. The farmers' market and flea market are the largest in the region.

Things to see and do

Daisy Nook is the name of an area of the Medlock Valley between Oldham, Failsworth and Ashton under Lyne. The area is very popular for short walks, sunbathing, fishing and horse riding. The canal towpaths make attractive and level walks. There are plenty of seats and grassy areas for sitting and enjoying the scenery.

Waterhouses Aqueduct, which is 80 feet high, once carried the canal across the River Medlock. It is now a footpath and bridle track.
