More about the area

Gillingham is a town in the county of Kent. It is just south of the River Medway estuary and close to the town of Chatham. There is a twice weekly market, a good shopping centre, a marina, leisure centre, several parks as well as a popular golf club.

Local history

Gillingham is steeped in naval history.  Queen Elizabeth I founded the dockyard, on the site of the present gun wharf.  Part of Gillingham formed a limb of the Cinque Ports in medieval times and the maritime importance of the area continued up until the late1940s. The dockyard was closed in 1984. The Royal Engineers Museum of Military Engineering is well worth a visit, as is the historic Chatham Dockyard.

Transport links

The development is conveniently situated just off junction 4 of the M2, near the A278. Regular bus services run to nearby Gravesend, Maidstone, Luton and the other Medway towns - and Gillingham and Rainham are both served by mainline stations with frequent trains running into London, Faversham and Dover.
