Local history

Auckland Castle (often known locally as The Bishop's Palace), has been the official residence of the Bishop of Durham since 1832. The grounds of Auckland Castle alone contain seven listed structures. The route of the Roman road passes straight through the middle of the town on its way to the nearby Roman fort at Binchester. The town also has a Grade II listed Victorian railway viaduct crossing the River Wear. The nearby village of Escomb is home to an Anglo-Saxon church.
