You can walk from the town centre straight into the beautiful grounds of the magnificent Auckland Castle. Surrounding the castle is the Bishop’s deer park - a great place for a picnic or an autumn stroll through vividly coloured parkland.
History and cultural interest
The Whitworth Hall estate was home to the Shafto family for over 300 years, made famous by the nursery rhyme. It is now the site of a hotel and deer park, plus a walled garden. The market town of Bishop Auckland is known as the gateway to Weardale, with commanding views of the surrounding countryside.
The historic town centre has a superb library, cinema, theatre and arts complex in the Town Hall. Nearby are the remains of Binchester Roman Fort, which has the best preserved Roman military bath house in Britain.
How to get here
Spennymoor in County Durham stands above the Wear Valley seven miles south of the city of Durham. The estate is located not far from the A688, which connects to the A167 and the A1(M). There are several bus routes through the village. Route 21 and 22connects the village with Bishop Auckland, Durham and Newcastle.
The nearest railway station is at Bishop Auckland where services include Darlington, Middlesbrough and Saltburn. In the summer there are also services to the pretty seaside town of Whitby.
